History
The Ndlovu Youth Choir was established in January 2009 by the Ndlovu Care Group, a childcare community based in Elandsdoorn, Limpopo. Their early years were marked by a commitment to nurturing young talent and preserving South African musical traditions. In October 2018, they gained international attention through their collaboration with South African flautist Wouter Kellerman on the single "Shape of You," which won the Best Independent Music Video at the Hollywood Music Awards.
Towards the end of 2019, the choir auditioned for season 14 of America's Got Talent, impressing audiences worldwide and reaching the finals. Although they did not win, their exposure led to a record deal with Syco Entertainment, a joint venture with Sony. Following their return from the competition, they began recording their debut studio album, Africa, which was released on November 29, 2019. The album debuted at number one in South Africa and won the Best Adult Contemporary Album award.
Building on their success, the choir released their second album, Rise, on December 11, 2020. Their third studio album, Grateful, followed on April 29, 2022, featuring collaborations with prominent artists such as 25K, Sun-El Musician, Tyler ICU, and the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain.
In a landmark cultural moment in 2025, the choir was authorized by the surviving members of Queen and the Mercury Phoenix Trust to perform a Zulu translation of "Bohemian Rhapsody." This rendition, under the artistic direction of Ralf Schmitt, uniquely combines isicathamiya (a traditional a cappella style) with kwassa kwassa (a dance and music style from the Democratic Republic of Congo), showcasing the choir’s innovative approach to music.
Looking ahead, the choir announced an extensive tour scheduled to run from February 5 until August 2, 2026, promising to bring their vibrant performances to audiences around the world.
